— The city of Merced will hold a community meeting at McNamara Park today to discuss the progress of the upcoming $2.6 million renovation of south Merced's most popular recreation area.

City staff will be on hand to explain the planned improvements and answer questions about the grant that will pay for the upgrades.

The event will start at 6 p.m. at 1040 Canal St., near the bleachers.

Planned renovations include installing two artificial-turf fields and remaking an all-purpose grass field. The playground equipment and basketball courts will be upgraded, and a covered entertainment pavilion and splash pad will be added.

Existing restrooms will be replaced with a modern, 10-stall facility, and the irrigation system will be improved.

Safety measures will be upgraded with new fences and the installation of security cameras.

The city plans to go out to bid on the project in June, with construction beginning in August. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
