Peiper: May 8: When war in Europe ended

May 9, 2013

On May 7, 1945, at 2:41 a.m., German Gen. Alfred Jodl signed the unconditional surrender document, ending hostilities in Europe.

On May 8, 1945, it was announced to the Western news that the war in Europe was over. Some soldiers would come home; others would begin training for combat in the Pacific.

Today we celebrate V.E. (Victory In Europe) Day on May 8.
