'Ugh the Duck' brings opera to UC Merced

May 26, 2013

A public opera performance, already glimpsed by 2,500 Merced County schoolchildren, is planned today, according to a news release.

"Ugh the Duck," a retelling of "The Ugly Duckling," is scheduled at 7 tonight in the Lakireddy Auditorium at The University of California at Merced, 5200 N. Lake Road. Organizers suggest a donation of $5 for adults and $3 for children.

"It celebrates differences, addresses bullying, rejoices in community and emphasizes that it is not so much where we come from, but where we go from here," the release stated.

Arts UC Merced Presents, Merced Opera in the Schools and the Merced County Office of Education worked together to bring the 45-minute mini-opera to the 2,500 youngsters since Monday.

The joint venture brought students to campus while exposing them to the fine arts and gave UC Merced students an opportunity to work with entertainment professionals, the release stated.

Professor Katherine Steele Brokaw is directing the show and co-producing it with music theater lecturer and professional opera singer Jenni Samuelson and Arts UC Merced producing manager Gail Benedict.

The play was written by Nancy Steele Brokaw and includes music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Arthur Sullivan. UC Merced students and professionals star in the opera.
