MEMORIAL — Memorial Day is often associated with barbecues, camping and other outdoor activities, but the holiday is about much more than that.
It's a day to remember and pay tribute to the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military.
In Merced County and around the region, many ceremonies will be held over the weekend to honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
Flags and crosses 7 a.m., Winton Cemetery, 7651 Almond Ave. Members of the Atwater Veterans of Foreign Wars will be placing flags and crosses on veterans' graves. Volunteers needed; call (209) 358-7224 to help. Removal will take place on May 28.
"Flowers for Our Fallen Soldiers" 10:30 a.m., San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, 32053 W. McCabe Road. Members of Stanislaus East Republican Women Federated, with friends and relatives, will meet at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery Visitors Center to place white carnations on graves. Memorial Day Celebration 11 a.m., San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery. Flag presentation, national anthem and musical selections including "The Day the Eagle Cried," "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "God Bless the USA," with speakers, a wreath presentation, a national moment of remembrance, rifle salute and more. Memorial Day service 9 a.m., Calvary Cemetery, Childs Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Organized by the the American Legion and VFW combined honor guard, the tribute will feature a flag-raising ceremony, rifle salute and remarks by several commanders and speakers.
Memorial Day service 10 a.m., Merced District Cemetery, 1300 B St. in Merced. The ceremony includes a flag-raising, rifle salute, musical performances, several speakers and a choir. Guests are invited to stay and enjoy refreshments.
Courthouse Park Memorial Noon, 21st St. and N St. The annual ceremony will feature several guest speakers and dignitaries, as well as flag-rising and rifle salute by the American Legion and VFW combined honor guard. Mothers who have lost a child in the service will be honored.
Memorial Day Ceremony 5 p.m. at the Livingston Memorial Park, Park and Main streets. The Livingston-Delhi VFW Post 8327 and the Ladies Auxiliary will host their annual observance. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony in the Veterans Memorial Building, Seventh and Peach streets. Call (209) 394-2059.
The Merced Unit of American Legion Auxiliary will honor veterans and members of the Armed Forces by displaying a yard flag with inscription of the name of the warrior you want to honor on four holidays, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Veterans Day.
