Arrest made in armed robbery

May 28, 2013

— One man was arrested and another is being sought in connection with a robbery on Main Street, police reported Friday.

Merced Police responded to the 1200 block of Main about 6:30 p.m. Thursday after the victim said two men approached him, pointed a gun at him and demanded his cell phone as well as his money.

Police said the two robbers left the area in a white Ford Expedition westbound on Main, and the victim followed in his own vehicle.

He trailed the men to North Bear Creek and Creekside drives, police said, where the driver of the Ford got out of his vehicle and pointed a gun at the victim — forcing him to stop following them.

Police said the victim later identified Ruben Chavez, 27, of Merced as one of the suspects. He was arrested near the robbery scene, but police did not recover a gun or any stolen property.

Chavez was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery, and remains in the Merced County Jail without bail.

The second suspect is described as a black man in his late 20s or early 30s. He was being sought Friday by authorities.
