'West Side Story' claims Playhouse Merced turf

June 9, 2013

— A production of "West Side Story," the hit Broadway musical and motion picture, is on at the stage at Playhouse Merced through June 16.

Featuring music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the musical takes the star-crossed-lovers story of "Romeo and Juliet" and sets it in a gang-rich area of 1950s New York City.

The production is directed by Rob Hypes, musically directed by Brad Reed and choreographed by Noelle Chandler and Anthony Hughes. The main characters Tony and Maria are played by Patrick Keegan McKenna and Rachel Pearre.

The production features such classic songs as "Tonight," "Maria," "Somewhere," "One Hand, One Heart" and "Officer Krupke."
