— A juvenile riding his bike along Olive Avenue during the weekend was unhurt after gunshots were fired at him from a passing vehicle, Atwater police Lt. Sam Joseph reported Monday.

Officers received a call of shots fired at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday near Olive Avenue and Willow Street, Joseph said.

Witnesses told police a Latino teen was riding his bike when the drive-by shooting occurred. The incident happened in the 2100 block of Olive, according to Joseph.

Police were pointed to the Kings View Apartments on Olive Avenue and Marguerite Street by several witnesses, Joseph said. After checking the area, they found a number of places on the lawn that had been hit by gunfire and recovered some small-caliber bullets.

The 17-year-old rode his bicycle to a home in the 1200 block of Sierra Vista Drive, the witnesses told officers.

When contacted by police, the victim confirmed he was shot at but provided only limited information. He could not identify the car or the occupants, Joseph said.

Two witnesses described the car as a 2007 or newer full-size red or maroon pickup truck. They told police at least two people were inside the truck.

Joseph said the victim denied gang affiliation but has prior gang-related contacts with police.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call the Atwater Police Department at (209) 357-6396.
