Stanislaus rallies past Merced in county all-star game

Trevor Chaney found himself on the mound longer than expected on Friday night.

The Pitman High junior was called on in relief early for the Stanislaus County All-Star team when Enochs' right-hander Kyle Dunnegan suffered a finger injury.

Chaney delivered four scoreless innings against Merced County, allowing his team to rally from a three-run deficit as Stanislaus County erupted for five runs in the seventh inning en route to a 7-4 win in the fourth annual Merced County vs. Stanislaus County All-Star Baseball Game at Merced College.

Stanislaus is now a perfect 4-0 against Merced in the series.

"I was only expecting to pitch two innings," Chaney said. "The guy before me (Dunnegan) hurt his finger so they asked if I could go three. After the third inning, I felt good, so I asked if I could go another."

Chaney gave up just one hit and struck out four in his four innings of work.

Merced County appeared headed to their first win since the game was set up 4 years ago.

Atwater's Vic Tiscareno gave Merced the early lead with a bad-hop single off of Turlock's Tyler Murphy. Tiscareno hit a chopper that hit the lip of the grass and bounced over the head of Pitman's Jordan Gonzalez at first base, allowing Los Banos' Corbin Lilledahl and Golden Valley's David Vidauri to score with two outs in the bottom of the second inning to give Merced a 2-1 lead.

Le Grand's Carlo Del Real, who is playing for Merced County for the third straight year, added a two-run double off of Dunnegan in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 4-1.

"It's an all-star game, so you're just looking for something good to hit," Del Real said. "(Stanislaus) creamed us the last two years. We had a 4-1 lead and we're looking good."

However, mistakes doomed Merced County late.

Two defensive miscues in the top of the seventh helped set the stage for a five-run inning for Stanislaus.

Denair's Patrick Dudley started the inning with a walk against Buhach Colony's Kaden Verdin and moved up to second on a wild pitch. Dudley came around to score when Beyer's Josh Chamberlain reached on an error to cut the lead to 4-2.

Pitman's Brennan Hauser later drove in Chamberlain with a sacrifice fly and Turlock's Adam Groesbeck scored on an error to tie the game at 4-4.

Hughson's Josh Holcraft delivered the big blow with a two-run single off of Pacheco's Omar Sierra to give Stanislaus a 6-4 lead.

Gonzalez came on to strike out three batters in the bottom of the ninth to get the save.
