— The name of the new superintendent of the Atwater Elementary School District is expected to be announced at the board's June 25 meeting.

Retiring Superintendent Melinda Hennes said the search for her replacement has reached the final phase. Five candidates for the position were interviewed June 1 by separate professional and community committees.

The results of those interviews, combined with other information, were reviewed by trustees June 4, with three finalists selected. Final interviews were scheduled June 8.

Hennes, who is retiring at the end of June after eight years of service, said the board reports the pool of candidates was strong and expects a formal announcement of the selection at 6:15 p.m. during the June 25 meeting.

Retired Merced Union High School District Superintendent Bob Fore led the selection process. The salary range for the position is $145,000 to $160,000 a year based on experience, with $9,508 provided to purchase medical, dental and vision benefits.

The district has 4,583 pupils, six elementary schools, one school with kindergarten to eighth grades, a middle school with seventh- and eighth-graders and two community day schools.
