Around Town: Merced College for Kids courses will start soon

Merced College for Kids will begin mid-June and proposals for classes are accepted from anyone interested in teaching a class. The classes are designed for students going into the fourth- through eighth-grades and some of the classes include performing arts, aquatics, arts, sports camps, fitness, cooking, math, science, language arts, career exploration, Spanish and much more. Try a BMX Ride Night

ATWATER — Free BMX Ride Nights run through October from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month at Veterans Park. Ages 6 to 17 are invited. Bikes and helmets are available at no charge.

Swim lessons planned

The Merced Office of Recreation is taking signups for swimming lessons through June 27 and during July 8-18 at the Civic Center, 678 W. 18th St., from 1 to 5 p.m. Cost is $45 per session and classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McNamara Pool, 1040 Canal St., for ages 6 months to 12 years. Health screening set

Mental illness support

Merced County's branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness holds bi-weekly support groups for families affected by serious mental illness. For more information, call (209) 381-6844 and a volunteer will contact you within 48 hours.

Serving all veterans

Atwater's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9946 has been serving the needs of veterans and their families for more than 62 years and welcomes any veteran whose service included combat or a combat operation. We serve our veterans and our city through several programs. The post can assist veterans in receiving any benefits connected to their service at 1390 Broadway. Call (209) 358-7724.
