Man struggling after shooting

June 21, 2013

— A 23-year-old man was in serious condition Tuesday after being shot at a residence in the 3300 block of San Mateo Court, Merced police reported.

Police were called to the scene at 11:23 p.m. Monday and found the victim at the bottom of a stairway. He was conscious, but unable to speak with the officers because of gunshot wounds to his upper torso, according to Lt. Bimley West.

Paramedics responded to the scene to treat the victim until he could be flown by helicopter to a regional hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition. The victim's identity wasn't released.

No details have been released about the shooter, and police are investigating the incident. It's unknown whether the shooting is gang related, although West said the victim is a gang dropout.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Sgt. Scott Skinner at (209) 385-4702 or the department's automated tip line at (209) 385-4725. Tips are kept confidential and callers can remain anonymous.
