MERCED — More than a half-million dollars is being spent this summer on large-scale maintenance projects at Merced, Atwater and Livingston high school campuses.
The Merced Union High School District's deferred maintenance project list totals $536,690.
The money will pay for a new roof and windows for the East Campus Educational Center cafeteria; revamping the gym floor, removing asbestos roofing on breezeways, and repaving basketball and volleyball courts at Merced High School; resurfacing tennis courts at Atwater High School; and a new wood-shop exhaust system at Livingston High School.
Deferred maintenance projects are defined as those requiring general repair where structural issues are found. They are not ongoing expenses such as painting, said Leonard Kahn, the district's assistant superintendent for business services.
Kings Roofing of Patterson expects to be done with the East Campus Educational Center roof by the end of July. Ron Perez, the district's director of maintenance and operations, said the roof is at least 30 years old.
The new roof will be painted white to reflect the sun and help keep the building cool, Perez said.
Marko Construction of Fresno is being paid $33,972 to replace aging windows in the East Campus cafeteria with energy-efficient ones. That project is expected to be done by the end of July as well.
MRB of Stockton is stripping the gym floor at Merced High and redoing the graphics. The $13,965 project is due to be completed July 5, Perez said.
Yancey Roofing of Sacramento is being paid $144,942 to remove asbestos roofing along breezeways at the vintage 1959 Merced High. Old roofing will be replaced with asphalt shingles. The project has a July 31 completion date.
At Atwater High School, MV Construction of Atwater is being paid $142,257 to resurface tennis court surfaces that are old and cracked, Perez said. That project is set to be completed by the end of July.
Modern Air Mechanical in Merced is the contractor hired to replace the wood-shop exhaust with an upgraded system at Livingston High. Cost of the job is $32,395.
MV Construction is the contractor on a $64,838 project to strip and repave basketball and volleyball courts at Merced High, with a July 31 completion date.
