MERCED — Mercedians are invited to participate in a "health movement" that will be highlighted on downtown streets this Saturday.
The Downtown Merced Healthy Lifestyles Festival, which sponsors plan to hold annually, is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in front of Make It Happen, 451 W. 18th Street.
Admission to the event is free.
Eighteenth Street between Canal and K streets will be closed to traffic during the event. Highlights of the event will include cheerleading, martial arts, Zumba dance, yoga for kids, massages, raffle prizes, health food demonstrations and live music.
Eileen Vidales, owner of Make It Happen, said the focus of the event is to expose Merced residents to resources related to health in the community.
"We just want people to show up and have a good time," Vidales said. "We want to make people aware of their options for health awareness, and reminding them to take care of themselves."
Vidales said she was partially inspired to put on the event because she's had relatives who've died from diseases that could have been prevented if they'd had more information about health.
"It's up to us to take care our ourselves. No one else is going to do it," she said. "I grew up here, and I want people to live as long as they possibly can."
