— It's a world of whimsical places and larger-than-life characters, and it's coming to Playhouse Merced for three nights only.

"Seussical the Musical," the live stage production featuring characters from children's author Dr. Seuss, runs today through Sunday as part of the Summer Youth Theatre Festival.

The play's director, Danielle Rodriguez, said audiences can expect to see a lots of bright colors and animated dance numbers.

"No matter how old you are, everyone loves Dr. Seuss," Rodriguez said. "It takes you back to that place when you were young."

The show features many Seuss characters — including the eponymous Cat in the Hat, Horton the elephant (from "Horton Hears a Who"), Gertrude McFuzz ("Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories") and the Wickersham Brothers — in a series of musical numbers and scenes.

A cast of 40 children ages 6 to 12 spent about three weeks rehearsing for the show, Rodriguez said.

"I've wanted to direct this show, and I've put my heart and soul into it," she added.

"Seussical the Musical" debuted on Broadway in 2008, and has since been a popular show for touring productions, community and children's theater.
