LE GRAND — An assault on a Le Grand man last week has turned into a homicide investigation, the Merced County Sheriff's Department reported Monday.
Deputies arrested two men in connection with the death of Manuel Cuevas, 28, who died June 17, said Sheriff Mark Pazin in a news conference Monday.
Authorities say Cuevas was involved in an altercation with two men earlier that day. It's unclear what the argument was about, according to Pazin. "At the end of the altercation, we believe Cuevas died of blunt force trauma," Pazin said.
The fight started at a residence during a Father's Day gathering, Pazin said. The victim managed to escape and walk back to his home, an unknown distance, according to Pazin.
Cuevas reportedly collapsed shortly after arriving home and was found unresponsive by family members, Pazin said.
After an investigation, deputies arrested two suspects three days after Cuevas died: Steven Oseguera, 27, and Ricardo Leyva Jr., 33.
Oseguera is being held at the Merced County Jail without bail because he was on felony probation, Pazin said. Leyva is being held on $1 million bail.
Pazin said the department has forwarded the case to the Merced County district attorney's office to file homicide charges.
