Winton man, 31, dies in Jones Road crash

— A 31-year-old Winton man was killed Thursday evening in a two-car crash that was reported at Jones Road and Olive Avenue near Winton, according to a report from the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities said the crash was reported at 8:05 p.m. The man was driving a red 2000 Honda Civic west on Olive Avenue, approaching Jones Road, according to CHP Officer Jason Schoonhoven.

Elizabeth Escamilla, a 22-year-old from Modesto, was a passenger in the Honda.

Meanwhile, 35-year-old Juan Campos of Livingston was driving a 2005 gold Toyota Corolla north on Jones Road, approaching Olive Avenue. Campos was had one passenger, Nancy Campos, 15, in his car.

After the two vehicles came to the intersection of Jones Road and Olive Avenue, the Honda failed to halt for a posted stop sign and drove directly into the path of the Toyota, according to the CHP.

The front of the Toyota collided with the left side of the Honda. Both cars came to a rest on the dirt shoulder northwest of the intersection.

Juan Campos was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with moderate injuries. Nancy Campos suffered minor injuries, authorities said.

The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. Escamilla, his passenger, was taken to Memorial Medical Center with major injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
