A pair of Los Banos Little League all-star teams are off to running starts in the District 73 tournament, with the 12-year-old team and the 10-year-old team each earning a pair of wins over the weekend.
The 12-year-old team, under the management of White Sox coach Rick Augustine, started the tournament with a 14-4 win over Turlock National on Saturday in Mariposa a game that ended early due to the mercy rule. Trent Mallonee went 3-for-3 in the leadoff spot, Paulie Calderon added a pair of ground-rule doubles in his 3-for-4 performance, and Sebastian Luna ended the game with a home run to center field.
The next night, LB again invoked the mercy rule, this time in a 12-1 win over host Atwater, which had a first-round bye. Calderon and Trey Augustine started the game with back-to-back home runs to center field, with Calderon finishing 3-for-3 with another home run. Kyle McAndrew added a bases-loaded double to end the game in the fifth inning.
On the mound, Augustine and Kody Cardoza combined to strike out 10 batters in five innings of work.
The 10-year-old team, under the direction of Mike Wilson, started with a 13-3 win over Turlock National on Saturday, and followed that with an 11-1 win over Atwater on Sunday.
The 12-year-olds played Turlock American on Wednesday (results were unavailable at press time). Turlock American had a bye in the first round, then advanced to the game with a 4-3 win over Yosemite.
The 10-year-olds played Yosemite, which advanced to the game with an 8-7 win over Turlock American on Sunday and a 15-5 win over Mariposa on Saturday, on Wednesday (results were unavailable at press time).
The 11-year-old LB team, coached by Damian Aragona, dropped its opener 5-0 to Turlock National, and plays again today.
The Los Banos Juniors team also fell in its first game, a 2-1 loss to Turlock American, and plays today as well.
The seniors bracket doesn't have a Los Banos team in fact, it just consists of a pair of Turlock teams.
The winner of the District 73 tournament moves on to the Section 6 tournament against winners from District 67, which covers Patterson and Manteca up to the Tracy area, and District 8, which covers the Stockton area.
