Police: Gang member had altered gun

July 13, 2013

— Authorities say a 25-year-old validated gang member was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a gun and other charges.

Officers with the Merced Police Department's Gang Violence Suppression Unit say they learned Johnathan Huerta was in possession of a firearm.

Officers obtained a search warrant and served it at 5:21 p.m. July 4 at an apartment in the 500 block of Collins Drive.

While searching the apartment, police reported finding a Glock handgun, two magazines for the gun, ammunition and gang paraphernalia. Police said the handgun's serial number had been removed.

Huerta was booked at the Merced County Jail. His charges included possessing a firearm with an altered serial number and a gang enhancement.
