Playhouse Merced puts on kid-friendly version of classic 'Grease'

July 13, 2013

— "Grease: School Version," a G-rated adaptation of the popular musical, is being rehearsed at Playhouse Merced as part of the Summer Youth Theatre Festival.

Young people ages 12-18 signed up this week, paid a fee, participated in an audition process, and will be part of a fully produced show starting August 2 at 7:30 p.m.

"Grease: School Version" is based on the 1971 stage musical "Grease" and features music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey.

With the familiar story of Danny Zucko and Sandy Dumbrowski, high school sweethearts who come from different cliques, the musical has been altered and edited to be G-rated and suitable for young people.

Songs in the show include "Summer Nights," "Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee," "Greased Lightning," "Freddy My Love" and "Beauty School Drop Out."

Playhouse Merced's Summer Youth Theatre Festival production is directed by education director Noelle Chandler.

Danny is played by Baylor Browning and Sandy is played by Madison Mitchell. More than 25 other young people make up the rest of the cast.
