3 charged with having guns, ammo and drugs

July 14, 2013

A 26-year-old man and two teenage boys were arrested earlier this month on gun and drug charges after an operation by the Merced's Police Department's Gang Violence Suppression unit.

Robert Garcia, 26, was taken into custody not long after officers with the gang unit learned individuals living at the home in the 500 block of Easy Street possessed firearms and narcotics, Sgt. Chris Goodwin said.

Police obtained a search warrant and, with help from patrol officers, served the warrant at the home about 3:30 p.m. July 6.

When police arrived, they spotted several people standing on the driveway and inside a detached garage. All were detained.

Police found a 16-year-old with a loaded handgun in his waistband.

Officers say they searched the garage and found a shotgun, a loaded, stolen Glock handgun, ammunition for one of the handguns, and methamphetamine.

Another 16-year-old walked out of the garage just before it was searched, police said.

Both teens were booked at juvenile hall on charges that included possessing firearms and live ammunition, possession of stolen property and participating in a criminal street gang.

Garcia was booked at the jail on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine, contributing to the delinquency of two minors and participating in a criminal street gang.

Police said the gang unit has seized 10 firearms from gang members in the past two weeks.
