— One person was injured in a gang-related shooting that happened late Thursday, the Merced County Sheriff's Department reported Friday.

A Latino man and woman — about age 18 and 19 — were walking on Latham Drive and Carson Street when gunshots were fired at them, said Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin during a news conference.

A tan-colored Honda pulled up next to them and the occupants began firing at them, Pazin said.

The woman wasn't hit, but the man was wounded in the upper torso and taken to a Modesto-area hospital, according to Sheriff's Department spokesman deputy Delray Shelton.

He may sustain long-term injuries because of wounds near his neck, Shelton said, but is in stable condition.

Pazin said Friday that investigators believe the shooting is gang-related.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff's Department at (209) 385-7444.
