DUI suspect jailed after chase, crash into house

July 19, 2013

— A 22-year-old Merced man was arrested on suspicion of DUI, felony evading and hit-and-run on Thursday morning.

Police say that Jonathan Cordeiro was pulled over for a traffic stop after his 2002 Chevy pickup was weaving near Weston Way and East 21st Street.

According to Sgt. Rodney Court, the vehicle initially pulled over but sped away eastbound on East 21st Street when the officer got close to the vehicle.

A short pursuit ensued. The truck ended up westbound on East 20th Street and lost control while trying to make a turn on Orchard.

Court said the truck crashed into a home on the corner of the intersection and the driver fled the scene on foot. Cordeiro, who is out on parole, was apprehended about a block away.

He submitted to a breath test and the result was twice the legal limit, according to police officers. Police say the damage to the house was minor and no one was injured.
