— A 28-year-old man was arrested late Wednesday in connection with a hit-and-run incident in Merced that seriously injured a pedestrian, police reported Thursday.

Phillip Schneider of Merced was taken into custody in connection with the hit-and-run crash as well as driving under the influence.

The incident was reported just after 11 p.m. near Alexander Avenue and G Street, according to Sgt. Rodney Court.

Officers responded to the scene and found the 22-year-old male victim lying in the road with major injuries.

The victim was taken to Mercy Medical Center Merced. His condition is unknown.

Witnesses told police the man was hit by a dark-colored Jeep Cherokee, which left the scene. Officers said the Jeep was seen traveling northbound on G Street.

But several witnesses were able to follow the Jeep to a residence on Donna Drive.

Officers located the Jeep there, and Schneider was identified as the driver, police said.

When Schneider was taken into custody, officers reportedly determined he was intoxicated.
