After dropping the opener of the Section 6 tournament 8-7 to Sunrise on Saturday, the Los Banos 10-year-old all-stars had their backs against the wall in the double-elimination tournament.

And Los Banos responded, winning four straight elimination games to become the 2013 Section 6 champions.

"Oh man. These kids were so happy. I mean, they just — as you know, we lost that first game on Saturday, so we had to win Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday," Los Banos coach Mike Wilson said. "They did it. It was all them. We did a lot of traveling. Parents took time off, parents took sick days, vacation days — some of them canceled vacations."

Now the LB 10-year-olds head to San Jose for the start of the state tournament, where the start against Section 7 champions Eastlake Little League at 4 p.m. Saturday at Alex Anderson Elementary School.

After losing to Sunrise — which LB almost won after scoring four runs in the fifth inning before going three-up, three-down in the sixth — LB defeated Foothill 12-3 on Sunday, won a 3-2 rematch against Sunrise on Monday, defeated Tracy 9-7 on Tuesday, and went back to Stockton on Wednesday to defeated Tracy 18-6 in the final.

"The kids, I think it's one of those things where being 10 years old helped them," Wilson said. "They went about their business, and didn't change nothing. They didn't change their approach, their attitude — it's like they knew they would come back and beat everybody. These kids are great. This is probably one of the best teams I've had, and I've coached a lot of teams.

"They were just relentless."

The State Division II Tournament is another double-elimination bracket, featuring seven section winners.

"Now, going to state, there will be some real tough teams. Just getting there, it's a once-in-a-lifetime thing," Wilson said. "I keep telling these kids there's 600 kids in our league, and only 13 of them are still playing. That kind of opens their eyes a little bit."
