Debbie Hamrick: Jaywalkers overcharged to make money for Merced

July 28, 2013

I just want to let people who live in Merced know how hard up Merced is for money. A few months ago, before school was out, 45 kids from Merced High School got tickets for jaywalking.

They went to court this past Thursday and it cost them $200 each. If you add that up it is $9,000.

Is the city that hard up for money?

Yes, they should not have been jaywalking; but there is no crosswalk there. They should have gone to the corner, but kids will be kids.

I just think the citizens of Merced should know what is going on and what is going to be done with that large sum of money.
