Highway worker killed in Merced County ID'd as Lodi man

August 3, 2013

— The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health confirmed Wednesday it is investigating the death of a 43-year-old Teichert Construction worker who died the day before while on a job along Highway 99 in Merced County.

The victim was identified by the Merced County Coroner's Office as Jose Jimenez of Lodi.

Cal-OSHA officials said he was pinned between a piece of heavy equipment and some concrete.

Jimenez was working at Highway 99 and Arboleda Drive, near McHenry Road, about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when the accident occurred. Authorities said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cal-OSHA was called in to investigate the death because it was classified as an industrial accident. State officials said they will check for code violations and have six months to complete their investigation.

A statement from the construction company released Wednesday said: "Right now our focus is keeping in close contact with the family and our employees. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with the employee's family along with the entire crew that was affected."

Teichert is a family-owned construction and materials company that has been doing business in California for more than 125 years. A general contractor, Teichert builds many types of infrastructure including roads, sidewalks, freeways, curbs, utility trenches and gutters.

In its statement, Teichert stressed it has a longstanding commitment to safety and is cooperating with authorities investigating the incident.
