MORAGA — Rollo Adams said players would need to step up in the aftermath of a team incident that resulted in a number of Atwater Aviators' suspensions.
Chris Campbell answered his skipper's call.
The Cal State Stanislaus product made the most of his first start of the summer, tossing a complete-game victory as Atwater handed Tri-Valley Bercovich a 6-2 loss in the opening game of the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League's playoffs Friday afternoon.
Atwater (24-17) will face the top-seeded Alameda Merchants in the winners side of the bracket today at 1 p.m.
The winner of that game will advance to Sunday's championship series. The loser will play in an elimination game at 4 p.m.
Campbell helped make sure the Aviators won't have to play in one of those elimination games right away.
An error opened the door for a two-run Bercovich third inning, but Campbell was lights out the rest of the way. He allowed seven hits and struck out five.
The Atwater offense provided all the support he would need in the first two innings, jumping to a 5-0 lead.
A two-out fielding error allowed Atwater to plate a pair of runs in the first inning. Andrew Jaurique put the game out of reach with a base-clearing double in the second.
Brad Branzhoff (2 for 4) singled in an insurance run in the eighth. Matt Moceri also picked up a pair of hits in the win.
Seven different Aviators had hits in the game.
