Atwater's Bellevue School gym dedication honors former leaders

August 11, 2013

— Retired school Superintendent Melinda Hennes and her husband, Rick, will be remembered for some time thanks to the dedication of Bellevue School's gymnasium in their honor.

Atwater Elementary School District trustees held a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the gym at 1020 E. Bellevue Road. Besides dedicating the gym to the couple, the board held a "meet and greet" for new Superintendent Sandy Schiber.

Melinda Hennes retired this summer after eight years as district superintendent and a year as a school principal. She spent 36 years as an educator, many of them with Hilmar schools.

Rick Hennes, a former Atwater school principal, retired in the spring as superintendent of River Delta School District in Rio Vista.

Schiber was the former assistant superintendent of human resources for the Merced Union High School District.

Using bond money, the Atwater district built gyms at Bellevue and Mitchell Senior elementary schools, which can be used for community functions.
