SPCA adoption event

The Merced SPCA will hold its monthly adoption event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at Armstrong's Pet World, 1831 Bellevue Road. Kittens, cats and dogs available for adoption — cash only. Call (209) 384-7722.

Elks pancake breakfast

The Merced Elks will hold its monthly pancake breakfast from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday at 3600 Wardrobe Ave. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children. The meal includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, fruit, orange juice and coffee.

Customer service class

Merced College and the Greater Merced Chamber of Commerce are offering professional development training through the college's Customer Service Academy on Aug. 22 and 29 with morning and afternoon sessions at 630 W. 19th St. Workshops cost $23. Fall-winter classes

New fall-winter classes for children and youth at Building Young Leaders will start the first week of September. These include performing arts, creative classes, homeschool enrichment. There are also some classes for adults. For more information go to www.buildingyoungleaders.com.

Fund-raiser for soldiers

The Merced County Legal Professionals Association will hold its 30th annual fund-raiser from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 14 at DeAngelo's restaurant. Tickets are $25 per adult and $10 for children 8 and younger. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warriors Project, and there will be a silent auction and raffle. Call (209) 617-3029.

Find missing classmates

The 1962 El Capitan alumni group is trying to locate missing classmates. Anyone with any information is asked to call Mike Bik at (209) 725-1450.

Cell phones for seniors

The Merced County Area Agency on Aging is requesting the donation of unneeded cell phones for distribution to Merced County seniors age 60 and older. Seniors will be able to call 911 for emergency assistance only with these phones. They should have a charging unit and a battery that will hold a charge. Call (209) 385-7550.
