Who knows what will happen Sunday at Bellevue Bowl at the "Behind the Curtain" tournament?
Yes, curtains will be hanging from the ceiling between the bowlers and the pins. It'll be anyone's guess as to what happens next.
Competitors in the event hosted by the Merced/Atwater Women's 500 Club will roll three games of nine-pin no-tap with handicap based on highest book average of 2012-13.
It sounds like it will be a lot of fun trying to figure out what pins you have left to pick up. Entry fee is $22. Entry deadline is Saturday at 6 p.m. at Bellevue.
The tournament is open to all current USBC members with division for men and women. You don't have to be a 500 club member to bowl. The tourney is limited to 56 entries.
The league meetings for the fall season start next week. First will be the Monday Night Merchants at 7 p.m. Monday. League starts Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. The Guys & Dolls will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. with league starting Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. The Tuesday Senior league had its meeting Tuesday and starts Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. The Commercial Classic is set for Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. with league starting on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. The Friday Night Handicap has its meeting Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. with league kicking off on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. I will have more on the Scratch Trio league meeting and opening night next week. I will have all their season ending standings and point money. Association dues again this year will be $20 for your USBC membership card.
Monte Carlo night
There will be Monte Carlo bowling at Valley Bowl in Madera on Saturday night. You roll at colored pins and might win a few bucks doing it. From what I hear, at the end of the night, three game winners get to pull a card from a deck. If you pull a five of any suit, you must knock down five pins. If you pull an eight, you have to pick up eight pins. That is what Jim Mullings of Atwater did a month ago. He pulled an ace and picked off the 10 pin from the rack and the jackpot. It was worth at that time more than $700. Sign-ups start at 6 p.m. with the first ball rolling at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $14, and you must be 18 to bowl. Call Patti at (559) 674-0951 to reserve a spot.
Busy party room
The party room at Bellevue was rocking last Saturday as friends and relatives celebrated the 80th birthday of Manuel Frade. After the usual "Happy Birthday" singing, the kids and adults hit the lanes for an hour. Frade has been bowling a very long time, including Tuesday nights in the Guys & Dolls league at Bellevue. He travels to McHenry Bowl and Black Oak to bowl in their monthly senior no-tap tournaments. It was was a great and total surprise for Manual.
Another L.B. story
I had a call from the Queen of Merced bowling, Betty Brown, telling me that when she worked at the Los Banos Bowl she would help Angie during the lunch-rush hour despite not knowing the menu. One thing she did know is that when Angie gave you your plate of food, it tasted like it came from your grandmother's kitchen.
