GUSTINE — One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon between Gustine and Santa Nella, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The name of the victim has not been released.
The crash was reported at 2:40 p.m. at Cottonwood and Whitworth roads, according to officer Jesse Lopez, a CHP spokesman.
A 1989 Acura was reportedly traveling east on Cottonwood at an unknown speed, approaching Whitworth Road as a 2005 Ford driven by John Machado, 71, of Turlock was traveling north on Whitworth at about 55 mph.
The driver of the Acura failed to yield at a stop sign on Cottonwood, Lopez said. There's no stop sign on Whitworth Road at the intersection, Lopez said.
The Acura traveled into the intersection, and was struck broadside by the Ford. Both vehicles left the road and traveled into a walnut orchard. The Ford overturned, but Machado suffered only minor injures.
The driver of the Acura was unconscious. Lopez said witnesses were unable to pull that person from the vehicle, which burst into flames. The driver of the Acura was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lopez said the crash remains under investigation.
