A health center will answer questions during a forum on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, parts of which go into effect in January.

Golden Valley Health Centers will hold the forum at 6 tonight in the cafeteria at Tenaya Middle School, 760 W. Eighth St.

Marc Smith, Golden Valley Health's special projects manager, said the forum will be a way for the uninsured to become familiar with Covered California, the state's implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

"They'll be able to provide some good general information," he said.

The experts at the forum are certified as Affordable Care educators. Smith said he would encourage anyone with further questions to follow up at a Golden Valley Health clinic.

He also said much of the information is available at Covered California's website, The site also includes a cost-estimate calculator.

Enrollment for Covered Califonia begins Oct. 1. Smith said Merced County's three options for commercial insurance are all preferred provider organizations: Anthem, Blue Shield of California and Health Net.

The forum will also include information on tax credits, cost-sharing subsidies and Medi-Cal assistance.

Dinner, child care and interpreters are available during the forum.
