— Retired English teacher Ron Loewe is the first place winner of the 2014 Merced County Fair's annual slogan contest, officials announced.

"Saluting Our Farmers and Ranchers" was selected from 276 entries by the fair's board of directors. The theme for the 123rd fair is celebrating all those who make a living through agriculture.

Loewe will receive $100 for his winning slogan and a pair of season passes for next year's fair.

Fair officials said the next step is to launch the annual contest to find the right graphic design or photo illustration to go with the slogan. The creator of the winning logo design or photo illustration will get a $500 prize along with a pair of season passes. The deadline to turn in entries is Sept. 20. by 4 p.m.

To enter the contest, graphic artists may use any medium and submit a maximum of three entries on 8½- by 11-inch paper. For photo illustrations, submit a maximum of three 8½- by 11-inch prints.

For photo illustrations, photos must be high resolution (300 dpi or better). If a photo illustration is selected as the contest winner, high-resolution digital files must be provided.

Entries may be submitted to the fairgrounds office, 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way or mailed to 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Merced, 95341. Submissions should include the entrants' name, address and phone number and a copy of the following statement with the artist's signature: "The logo entry (entries) are the artist's own original, artistic creation and intellectual property."

Any photo of a recognizable, living person must be accompanied by a photo release form signed by that person.

The fair's board of directors will select the first-, second- and third-place graphic design or photo illustration winners at their October board meeting. All eligible entries will be assigned a number for judging. The numbered entries will be reviewed by the fair's marketing-promotions committee before the winning entries are selected by the fair board.

The entrants' names won't be revealed until after the winners are picked. The second- and third-place winners will each receive a pair of season passes to the fair. Information on the contest will be available at www.mercedcountyfair.com. For more information, call the fair office at (209) 722-1507.
