With Rim fire containment near Yosemite at 80 percent, the Red Cross today will close its shelter in Sonora.

At the height of its use, on August 23, more than 180 residents stayed overnight at the shelter at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds. With residents returning to their homes, the American Red Cross has decided to close the shelter this afternoon.

"The work at this shelter would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our volunteers and the tremendous support of the community," said Kathleen Weis, CEO for the Red Cross Capital Region.

Shelter facts since opening Aug. 19:

• At least 150 Red Cross volunteers staffed the shelter

• Shelter provided at least 950 overnight stays

• Red Cross and Mother Lode Lions Club volunteers served nearly 5,000 meals
