September 8, 2013

A driver and his passenger were seriously injured Sunday evening in a car accident in Merced, authorities reported.

Police said a 1999 Toyota Corolla and 1993 Chevrolet Suburban collided at the intersection of G and Main streets about 6:34 p.m. Sunday.

The driver of the Corolla, 22-year-old Aarom Kelly-Claudio of San Francisco, and his passenger, 19-year-old Bridgett Womack of Merced, were trapped in the car. Firefighters with the Merced Fire Department used hydraulic shears to get them out, police said.

Kelly-Claudio and Womack suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. Kelly-Claudio was treated at Mercy Medical Center in Merced, and Womack was taken to Memorial Hospital of Modesto by helicopter.

Neither Suburban driver Gustavo Canal, 28, nor passenger Eddie Torres, 50, both of Merced, were seriously injured, police said.

Neither driver appeared to have been drinking alcohol, police said. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call detective Sgt. Scott Skinner at (209) 385-4702, or the Merced Police Department tip Line at (209) 385-4725.
