— UPDATE: A Los Banos man shot Monday after allegedly stabbing a police officer has died, authorities said.

A Los Banos police officer shot a man Monday after the man struck the policeman with an undisclosed object, Cmdr. Ray Reyna Jr. reported.

Reyna said the officer, whose name is being withheld, responded to a house on the 600 block of Vine Street in Los Banos after police received a request for a welfare check of an elderly man in the home.

While the officer spoke to the man, another man in the home attacked the officer with an object, Reyna said. Police would not disclose what the object was. The relation of the elderly man to the one accused in the attack was unclear.

The officer shot the man at least once, Reyna said.

Reyna did not disclose the name of the suspect. The man was flown to a Modesto-area hospital and has undergone surgery, Reyna said. The officer suffered minor injuries.
