SARATOGA — Pete Brigham had a nice afternoon with four goals and three steals, but the Merced College men's water polo team saw their score doubled in a 16-8 loss to Modesto Junior College at the West Valley Tournament.
The Blue Devils went 1-2 in the season-opening tournament. Hector Rangel chipped in two goals and Justin Cowan had a goal and two assists.
UCM women win in volleyball
PORTLAND, Ore. The UC Merced women's volleyball team closed out a perfect Multnomah Invitational Tournament with a 25-13, 25-13, 25-10 victory over the tournament's host. The 3-0 showing by the Golden Bobcats improved their record to 4-3.
Merced High unbeaten in soccer
SANTA ROSA Javier Sanchez's second-half goal was enough to propel the Merced High boys soccer team to a 1-0 win over Granite Bay on Saturday night in the championship game of the Bay City Invitational at Montgomery High.
The Bears went 4-0 in the tournament to improve to 10-0 this season.
Meng Moua paced Merced with six goals in the four games, including two in the Bears' 3-2 win over Montgomery earlier on Saturday. Merced beat Lodi (3-2) and Fortuna (3-0) on Friday.
Merced women score 13 goals
OAKLAND The absence of its top two soccer players didn't seem to hurt UC Merced in its season-opening game against Mills College. The Golden Bobcats scored early and often in a 13-0 win. It was the most decisive victory in UCM's brief athletics history.
