September 9, 2013

A 21-year-old man was killed in a solo-vehicle crash Friday afternoon in Atwater, police said.

The crash was reported at 6:40 p.m. at First Street and Broadway Avenue, according to Lt. Samuel Joseph.

Police said preliminary reports indicated the driver, identified as Juan Jesus Zamora Murillo, was speeding west in a Dodge Dakota with one passenger in the 800 block of Broadway.

The SUV headed off the road onto the north curb, and the driver lost control of the vehicle, authorities said.

The Dakota rolled south and hit a PG&E power pole and a business sign. The pole was severed at the base, causing power lines to go down.

The driver was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center Merced.

His passenger, Vincent Ochoa, 52, was flown to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. He suffered a fractured neck and broken leg.

Atwater police said the crash remains under investigation.
