Barbecue competition, music fest promise hot weekend in Mariposa

As summer winds down each year, barbecue teams make their way to Mariposa for the annual Blazin’ Hog BBQ Competition and Zydeco Festival.

This year’s event will be held Saturday starting at noon and go until the music stops.

Sponsored by the John C. Fremont Hospital Foundation, the event raises money to provide new hospital equipment.

Lorna Coci, a publicist with the hospital, says, “So far we have 16 teams entered. It’s quite a crew.”

The teams are: Bad S BBQ, Kyjo Enterprises, Pigfeathers, Beer Belly BBQ, Tactical Chef, Smokin’ Guns BBQ, Pork Daddy’s BBQ, Chumly’s Backwoods BBQ, Beer Run BBQ, Cap N’ Q & the Grillin’ Crew, Porter’s BBQ, Miners Mix, We B Q’n, High Voltage BBQ, Big D’s BBQ and the Holy Smokers.

On the grills will be barbecued tri-tip, pork ribs and chicken for visitors to sample. Barbecue teams come from all over the country to compete. Cash prizes go to the winners.

Along with great food, live music is sure to bring audience members to the dance floor. Mariposa’s own acoustic indie rock band Colorado Road will be the opening act at 12:30p.m.

Delta King is the nickname for Mark St. Mary. He and his Zydeco Band are scheduled to be onstage at 2:30p.m. St. Mary’s mix of Zydeco, Cajun, French and Creole music with down-home blues and R&B keeps this group at the top of the Bay Area’s list of favorites.

The Blues Box Bayou Band blends American roots melodies with zydeco, Cajun and blues. Dancing to the BBBB works up a sweat, according to some fans. The group has gained a following in nearly two decades of performing on the road.

Complimentary group line-dancing lessons will be presented by Cleo Home.

General admission is $10 in advance, $15 at the gate. Admission for seniors is $10, and for ages 5-17 it’s $5.
