A man is dead and two others have been hospitalized following an Interstate 5 accident with a big rig earl Monday, California Highway Patrol officials said.

According to CHP spokesman Joel Gonzalez, a 1998 Infiniti driven by Alexander Filichev, 22, of Hercules, was in the fast lane traveling 70 mph northbound on I-5 south of Highway 165 at 3:05 a.m.

The Infiniti changed into the slow lane to pass a big rig and was subsequently behind a 1994 freightliner driven by Mario Herrera, 48, of Hanford. The freightliner was traveling at 45 mph, CHP officials said.

Filichev continued driving at a high rate of speed and the front of his vehicle hit the freightliner in the back, a CHP report states.

As a result of the crash the right rear passenger in the Infiniti, described as an elderly man from Hercules who was not wearing a seatbelt, died. Law enforcement is withholding the man’s name until his family can be notified of his death.

Filichev sustained major injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital, Los Banos. The Infiniti’s right front passenger, Serguy Filichev, 50, of Hercules, also sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

Herrera was not injured in the accident.

The Infiniti sustained major front end damage and the freightliner had moderate rear end damage as a result of the crash.
