MERCED — Steven Alvarez and the Golden Valley football team picked up where they left off last week.
The Cougar quarterback came out firing with long touchdown passes to Jashaan Wright and Isaac Daniels in the first quarter as Golden Valley won its second straight game, a 34-14 nonconference defeat of McNair of Stockton at Veterans Stadium on Friday night.
Wright added a second touchdown catch and Joe Gonzalez got a couple touchdowns on the ground to help Golden Valley improve to 2-3 on the year.
The Cougars lost their first three games before beating Davis last week.
The three touchdown passes gives Alvarez five scoring tosses in the last two weeks.
"We could see it out at practice one day," Cougars coach Dennis Stubbs said. "It's like something lifted from him and Alvarez has really improved the last couple weeks since then."
The Cougars, like the rest of the Central California Conference, have the week off next week. They open conference play at Atwater on Oct. 11.
"It's good for the kids to enjoy any success, especially in front of a huge homecoming crowd," Stubbs said of Friday's victory. "But now we have some real football to get ready for with one of the toughest league's around."
