The Los Banos Police Department announced a reorganization of its administration last week.

Sgt. Jason Hedden was promoted to commander, making him the third highest ranking person in the department, behind Police Chief Gary Brizzee and Cmdr. Ray Reyna Jr.

Hedden was sworn in as commander Sept. 9, but a ceremonial swearing-in was held at City Hall on Wednesday.

“I’m very excited. What I look forward to is being part of the decision-making and getting our guys the tools they need to effectively do the job,” Hedden said.

He replaces former Cmdr. Chet Stygar, who was demoted to sergeant after an April no-contest plea to misdemeanor drunken driving. Stygar was sentenced to three years probation, two days in jail and participation in a drunken driving diversion program.

Brizzee would not discuss Stygar’s reassignment, saying “We don’t discuss personnel matters.”

Hedden said he is now in charge of administrative strategy for the Police Department.

Brizzee voiced confidence in Hedden.

“I’m very fortunate to be surrounded by great people at the Police Department, and I’m excited to work with Jason for years to come,” Brizzee said.

Hedden, 31, a native of Waterford, became involved in the Explorer program in Stanislaus County. He served as a community service officer for the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department before attending the police academy and joining the Los Banos police force in 2004.

Hedden has three children and credits his success to his wife, Casey, for providing a solid, supportive home foundation.
