Atwater edges Golden Valley in Central California Conference opener

October 11, 2013

— Victor Tiscareno scored two touchdowns as the Atwater High football team opened Central California Conference play with a 19-14 victory over Golden Valley on Friday night at Falcon Field.

The Falcons (4-2 overall) had their hands full trying to stop Golden Valley star Jashaan Wright.

The senior receiver scored on a 25-yard pass from Steven Alvarez to give the Cougars (2-4) a 7-6 lead with 9 minutes left in the first half.

Tiscareno answered with a 5-yard touchdown run to give the Falcons a 12-7 lead with 3 minutes left in the second quarter.

Tiscareno added a 15-yard touchdown catch from Nathan Duran in the third quarter to extend the lead to 19-7.

Wright gave the Falcons a scare when he returned a punt 60 yards for a score to pull Golden Valley within 19-14 with 1 minute left in the game.

"They were big. They were physical up front. We didn't have a lot of success," Cougars head coach Dennis Stubbs said. "We had one drive we were able to move the ball inside."

Golden Valley had a great scoring opportunity late in the fourth quarter prior to Wright's punt return.

The Cougars had a first-and-goal situation from the 8-yard line, but stalled at the 2-yard line on fourth down.

"We didn't execute," Stubbs said. "We had the wrong personnel. The sad part is we called a timeout before the fourth down play and still went out with only 10 players.

"It was a learning lesson."
