Is Barnes & Noble really closing? If it is true, its a real shame and a loss to people who still love to browse the aisles of a bookstore instead of turning to a Kindle or other electronic device to learn something new, or to get the latest new book without waiting for weeks while our underfinanced library orders it. How are we supposed to spend our dollars locally when the shops and stores we enjoy close? What else is there to do in this town? Go to our funky mall?
Im not generally a pessimist but the loss of Barnes & Noble really scrolls my nerd, as my husband used to say. In other words, what a big, fat drag!
We need this bookstore. We need a Whole Foods and a Trader Joes. We need more classy restaurants, more culture, more high-thinking. The poor UC students who come here from other countries; so few pleasures to be found outside of the classroom. Think theyll be sticking around after they graduate? Think again.
I thought building the UC was going to bring all good things to this town. Its not working, folks.
Editors Note: A company vice president told the Sun-Star last week that the bookstore has been unable to negotiate an extension on its 10-year lease. The current lease expires in January.
