The Buzz: Tim Donnelly, other gun advocates announce recall effort

Gun advocates target 5 legislators for recall

Having failed to persuade Gov. Jerry Brown to reject a package of gun control bills, gun advocates announced Thursday they will push to recall its Democratic backers.

“Every single assemblyman and state senator swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution,” said Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, R-Twin Peaks. “And when they violate that oath by trying to erase the Second Amendment, then I think we have a duty” to “remove that threat.”

The effort comes after Second Amendment stalwarts recalled two Colorado legislators last month.

Targeting Brown would have been prohibitively expensive, said Jennifer Kerns, who is working on the recall effort and for Donnelly’s gubernatorial campaign.

The recall will focus on Sens. Norma Torres and Ben Hueso, Assemblywomen Lorena Gonzalez and Sharon Quirk-Silva, Speaker John A. Pérez and maybe others, she said.

Republican Assembly members Brian Jones and Shannon Grove have also signed on to the effort, Kerns said.

California Democratic Party spokesman Tenoch Flores dismissed it in an email as a “a ploy to boost” Donnelly’s campaign for governor.
