Edgar Coronado: Raise awareness of ‘safe surrender’

October 25, 2013

Regarding the September editorial “There’s a safe way to surrender a baby”: I had never heard of the “safe surrender” law that allows parents who are unable to take care of their children to give them up while staying anonymous.

Even though I believe that no parent should ever give up his or her child, I also believe that it is better that they leave the child with a family that will care for them and love them. That can reduce the number of unwanted babies found dead. I agree that there are too many people who are not aware of all of the options parents have. More awareness needs to be raised about this safe surrender law so that unwanted infants aren’t abandoned or treated inhumanely.
