SURDICH: Tournament sets attendance mark

October 29, 2013

— Another very successful 500 no-tap tournament was held by our local Merced/Atwater Women's 500 Club last weekend. The event set a record for attendance.

Last year, they had 50 women bowlers. This year, they had 64 bowling in three divisions. They had women from Madera to Sacramento, and everywhere in between.

One 300 game was rolled by Mary Ksenzulak of Antioch, and she ended up in third place in the A division. A 287 was rolled by president LaDonna Stone, who took first in the A division. The club had a few glitches.

There was a little confusion after the tournament was over about the checking of the scores and averages. I guess some bowlers were using their 2013 book average and a few were using their summer averages. It was taken care of.

Here are the champions of the 41st Budweiser No-Tap Invitational. In the A division, it was Stone in first (850) for $167; in second was Marie Herrera (842) for $56; in third was Ksenzulak (839) for $46; and in fourth was Julie Egleston (814) for $39. The B had Pauline Bedford of Sacramento (853) in first for $167; tied for second were Sandy Lander of Madera (804) and Jackie Wilson of Modesto, winning $51 each; and in third was Nevora Nush (776) for $39. In the C was Donna Pote of Madera (812) in first for $170; in second was Mary Hamilton (779) for $59; third was Linda Dance of San Jose (771) for $48; and in fourth was Trudy Flaig of Stockton (756) for $41.

Up next for the club will be their Holiday Scotch Doubles, which is open to all USBC bowlers. It's set for Dec. 8 at 1:30 p.m. Entry fee is $22 per bowler.

BVL tourney

The annual Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL) charity tournament is scheduled for Nov. 10 at Bellevue Bowl at 1 p.m. A $100 gift certificate has been donated courtesy of Tommy Cardoza, general manager of Bellevue, to be raffled off. Raffle tickets will be sold during league play and at the tournament. The certificate can be used in the bowl's pro shop for shoes, towels, polish or drilling. The state Helen Duvall finals will be held at the Bowlium Lanes in Montclair in Southern California. The finals will be held on March 29, 2014, at the 32-lane center. Last year, our association donated $1,808 to the BVL. Karen Tweed, president and chair of the event, hopes to break that number this year.

Modesto 500 club

In the A division, LaDonna Stone (661) won $110; in sixth place was Nevora Nush (593) winning $67; and in seventh was Julie Egleston (590) for $47. In the B division, Mary Hamilton (585) got $50 for sixth place.
