LOS BANOS — One person was shot outside Los Banos early Wednesday, and a nearby elementary school was locked down briefly as a security precaution.
The victims identity was not available, but he was described by the Merced County Sheriffs Department as a man in his late 40s or early 50s.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation and still unknown at this time, Deputy Delray Shelton said.
The wounded man was taken by helicopter to a Modesto hospital for surgery. An update on his condition was not available, the Sheriffs Department said.
The man and a female minor were at a home near 20000 Jersey Road between 8:30a.m. and 9a.m. when words were exchanged with a man and a woman outside the residence, the Sheriffs Department said.
At some point, multiple shots were fired and the victim was struck, Shelton said.
No other injuries were reported.
The wounded man was taken to the nearby Charleston Elementary School to call for help. School officials contacted law enforcement and locked down the campus as a precaution, according to Steve Tietjen, Los Banos Unified School District superintendent.
Security measures were lifted about 9:45a.m., and none of the schools 389 students were endangered, school and law enforcement officials said.
Shelton said the man believed to be responsible for the shooting had been detained by the Sheriffs Department but not arrested. He was being interviewed by investigators Wednesday afternoon.
