Merced man injured in robbery, police say

November 6, 2013

— A 36-year-old Merced man treated and released at an area hospital Tuesday told investigators he had been beaten and robbed by more than a dozen men in hooded sweatshirts, Merced police said.

The victim’s name was withheld for safety reasons.

Lt. Bimley West said the victim was highly intoxicated and provided police with few details.

“He said he was not sure exactly where the incident may have occurred,” West said.

The man told police he may have walking in the 200 block of West Main Street just after 6 p.m. when he was attacked by 10 to 15 Latino men in black hooded sweatshirts. He said they stole between $60 and $100 from his pockets.

The victim suffered bruises and lacerations to his head and face.

West said the victim informed police that he would not be able to identify his attackers.

Police said it was not clear if the attack was gang-related because the injured man provided very limited information.
