The city of Merced was incorporated in 1889 and is turning 125 years old next year! There will be a community celebration in the summer of 2014, and we are calling on all interested residents to be involved in the planning of this historic occasion.
The festivities will recognize early events in our local history, such as the arrival of the railroad and the towns incorporation, as well as more recent milestones such as the arrival of UC Merced.
We have accomplished a great deal in 125 years, and a lot of hard work has gone into tilling our fertile soil, building our downtown, beautifying our neighborhoods and making Merced a great place to live and work.
Merceds rich history is filled with events that have challenged Mercedians to be resilient, hardworking and innovative. During our celebration, we will commemorate times past and embrace our bright future.
The kickoff planning meeting will be held Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. in the Sam Pipes Conference Room on the first floor of the Civic Center at 678 W. 18th St. We welcome your thoughts and ideas on how to commemorate this occasion, including your input on choosing a theme.
There will be opportunities for residents to lead significant parts of this celebration or take on lesser roles that will require much smaller amounts of time and effort. Please consider this your personal invitation to attend and be involved with planning this historic event. We hope to see you on Nov. 19 and at our celebration next summer!
